About the speaker

My name is Dan and I work at innocent as their Head of Creative. I've worked there since the company launched in 1999. I oversee all creative tasks, from copy-writing to design to advertising to brand stuff. The thing that I love doing most is writing the words that give innocent its own voice. And the thing that gets me most excited is that we can take the company/brand anywhere we want, and that we still don't quite know where that's going to be.

What was talked about

Organisations that neglect their writing skills are missing a trick. Seems dumb to not write well when it's the best way of communicating with someone (bar having a good long chat). So I thought I'd talk about how we use words at innocent. We think it helps give us our own voice, our own unique way of communicating with the people who drink our drinks. It's not what you say, it's the way that you say it.

The top tips

At innocent we reckon you'll write well if you:

  • keep the main thing the thing
  • stay consistent in what you're saying
  • find a good spot in which to write
  • stay interesting
  • own a tone
  • write quickly
  • and be yourself
