About the speaker

Phil Carter studied at Norwich School of Art and The Royal College of Art with Phil Wong before starting design consultancy Carter Wong in 1984, now Carter Wong Tomlin with the addition of Ali Tomlin as fellow director.

Their company design ethos remains the same, which is in the generation of ideas' or, more simply, creative thinking rather than a set style. This approach has enabled them to win many design awards and have their work represented in prestigious design annuals such as D&AD on a regular basis over the years.

Phil has served as external examiner for the Graphic Design courses of both Bath and Kingston Universities and has currently begun a three year stint as external examiner to the department of Communication Art and Design MA course at The Royal College of Art.

Never without his camera or sketchbook he is a firm believer in getting valuable inspiration from anything, anywhere, anytime. Similarly, a passionate collector of ephemeral items and paraphernalia which feeds his imagination... and fills his house.

What was talked about

Graphic Design can best be summed up in a couple of words, problem solving.

"I run an organisation, I need a new identity."

"I represent a worthy cause, I need cost effective literature."

"I have a start-up business, I need effective packaging."

The top tips

  • Be original. You're as individual as your DNA and besides, nobody remembers me-toos.
  • Be resourceful. Small budgets don't mean small ideas.
  • Be noticed. Promote yourself and and word of mouth will do the rest, and for free.
  • Be what you are. Honesty pays.
  • And lastly, whatever you do, employ a bit of lateral thinking and it will take you on a journey.
